Electrical Repairs & Fault Finding

Socket & Switch Repairs in Surrey & London

Socket and switch repairs cover dead, loose, scorched, cracked or buzzing sockets and switches. Most single repairs take under an hour once the fault is found, though a fault further back on the circuit takes longer to trace. A like-for-like replacement rarely needs a certificate, but the circuit is still tested afterwards.

A socket that has stopped working, a switch that feels loose or a faceplate with scorch marks should not be ignored. These are often early signs of a loose connection, which can overheat.

Joe will find the cause, repair or replace the faulty part and check the rest of the circuit so you are not back in the same position next month.

Typical work

  • Dead or intermittent sockets
  • Cracked, discoloured or scorched faceplates
  • Loose or sparking switches
  • Buzzing dimmer switches
  • Replacing outdated or damaged sockets and switches

What the job involves

The circuit is isolated, the faulty fitting removed and the connections behind it checked. Loose or overheated terminals are the most common cause of scorching and intermittent power. Discoloured cable ends are cut back to clean copper, and the fitting is repaired or replaced.

If the fault is not at that point, testing works back along the circuit to the junction, socket or consumer unit where it is. Faults that go beyond one fitting are covered on our fault finding page.

Signs you need this

  • Brown or black marks around the pin holes or on the faceplate
  • A plug that falls out or feels loose in the socket
  • Crackling, buzzing or a hot smell from a socket or switch
  • A switch that sparks when used or has to be held to work
  • Sockets that work some days and not others

Scorch marks or a burning smell mean stop using that socket, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if it is safe to reach, and have it checked before it is used again.

What affects the cost

The main factors are how many fittings need attention, whether the fault is at the fitting or elsewhere on the circuit, and the type of replacement. A standard white socket is a simple swap. Matching an older or decorative finish, or replacing a damaged back box in a solid wall, takes longer. If several fittings are failing, an inspection of the circuit may be the better first step, and new points are covered under socket and switch installation.

Common questions

A socket has scorch marks. Is it dangerous?

Scorching usually means a connection has been overheating, which can damage the cable as well as the fitting. Stop using the socket and have it checked before it is used again.

Can one dead socket mean a bigger problem?

Sometimes. A dead socket can be a fault at that point, a loose connection at another socket on the same circuit, or a tripped device at the consumer unit, which is why the whole circuit is tested.

Why does my dimmer switch buzz?

Buzzing is common when an old dimmer is used with LED lamps or loaded beyond what it was designed for. Replacing it with a dimmer suited to LEDs usually stops the noise.

Should I repair or replace a cracked socket?

Replace it. A cracked faceplate can expose live parts, so the whole fitting should be changed rather than glued or taped.

Why does my plug feel loose in the socket?

The contacts inside the socket wear with use and stop gripping the pins. A loose fit causes poor contact and heat, so the socket should be replaced.

Is a warm socket normal?

A socket supplying a heavy load such as a heater can feel slightly warm, but it should never be hot, discoloured or smell. Heat at a socket usually points to a loose connection or an overloaded adaptor.
