General Construction Work in Surrey & London
General construction work covers the building jobs that sit alongside electrical work, such as chasing walls, making good plaster, small alterations and preparing outbuildings for power. Timescales depend on the scope, from a few hours of making good to several days. Structural work may need building control approval, and that is agreed at the start.
Electrical work rarely happens on its own. Walls need chasing, ceilings need patching, and small building jobs sit alongside the wiring. Joe takes on general construction work so you are not coordinating several trades for one project.
Tell us what the whole job involves and we will say clearly what can be covered and what would need another specialist.
Typical work
- Chasing in cables and making good plaster afterwards
- Small building and renovation works around an electrical project
- Preparation and finishing for sockets, switches and lighting
- Outbuilding and garden room works alongside their electrical supply
What the job involves
Most construction work here follows the electrics: cutting chases for cables, fitting back boxes, then filling, plastering and making good once the wiring is in. It can also mean small alterations to suit a new layout, boxing in cables or pipes, or preparing an outbuilding or garden room for its supply. Doing both as one job means walls are opened and closed once, in the right order.
When this helps
- A rewire or new circuits where several walls need chasing and making good
- A kitchen or bathroom refit with sockets, lighting and small building changes
- A garden room or outbuilding that needs its cable route and supply planned together
- A small project where separate trades keep waiting on each other
What needs another specialist
Some work needs a specialist or formal approval: structural changes such as removing load-bearing walls, gas work, roofing, and anything that needs a structural engineer's design. Where a job includes these, we will say so plainly, so you can arrange the right people early rather than finding out halfway through.
What affects the cost
The size and number of areas involved, the wall construction, how much plastering and finishing is needed, and whether decorating is included or left to you. Combining building work with wiring installations or socket and switch installation often cuts the time spent going back and forth between trades.

Common questions
What construction work do you take on?
Work that sits naturally alongside an electrical project, such as chasing and making good, small alterations, boxing in and outbuilding preparation. Structural, gas and roofing work is outside that and needs the right specialist.
Can you make good after a rewire?
Yes. Chases and holes are filled and plastered so the walls are ready for decorating. Whether decorating itself is included is agreed when the job is quoted.
Do I need building control for this kind of work?
Small making-good and non-structural work usually does not. Structural alterations, and some changes to things like drainage or ventilation, do, so it is worth checking before the work is planned.
Can you prepare a garden room for electricity?
Yes. The supply and the building work around it, such as the cable route, can be planned together. The supply is usually a new circuit, which is notifiable and certified.
Do you take on building work with no electrics involved?
The focus is work linked to an electrical project. If your job is mainly building work, describe all of it in your enquiry, and the reply will say which parts can be covered.
Why combine building and electrical work in one job?
Walls are chased, wired and made good in the right order, so nothing is opened twice. It also means one person is responsible for the sequence rather than several trades working around each other.
